Pharaoh Ant
Small, but mighty - the army that never sleeps!
Physical characteristics
The Pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) is very small, only 1.5-2 mm long. It has a light yellow to reddish-brown coloration, with a darker abdomen. Its eyes are relatively large compared to the size of its head.
Biology and behavior
These ants form large colonies with multiple queens. They can reproduce by 'budding,' where a part of the colony breaks off and forms a new one. They prefer warm and humid places and are often found in buildings. They feed on a wide range of products, including greasy and protein-rich foods.
Harm
Pharaoh ants are a serious pest in hospitals and food establishments as they can transmit pathogens. They can penetrate almost any space due to their small size, including electrical equipment. In homes, they contaminate food and create inconvenience with their mass presence.
What you can do
Maintain extreme cleanliness, especially in the kitchen. Store food in airtight containers. Remove sources of moisture and seal cracks and openings. Avoid using sprays, as they can cause 'budding' and worsen the problem.
Professional control
Controlling Pharaoh ants requires specialized pest control services, as improper treatment can worsen the problem. Biogard's experts use specific baits with slow-acting insecticides that workers carry back to the colony, destroying queens and larvae. Application of insecticidal sprays or powders in cracks and voids may be necessary. Accurate identification of the species and application of the correct strategy are key.
